Bern Bümpliz, Tramway

Whenever I mention to someone in Bern that I like Cordon Bleus, the “Tramway” comes up: Have I already been there? Apparently, it has a bit of a reputation for big-sized portions, and while I typically do not mind a good Cordon Bleu to last for a while, I tend to value quality over quantity. The reason why I haven’t been so far however is a lot more mundane - the Tramway is simply only open in the evening, and my stomach tends to prefer big meals at lunchtime.

Anyhow; my friend and I decided that we have to have tried it, so we went there on a Friday evening - at least as far as I’m concerned, the expectations were not too high; but it was at least clear that we won’t go home hungry.

In the end, I was positively surprised. The reputation for portion size definitely exists for a reason! But the quality is still absolutely there. For a cordon bleu of this size, my respects to the chef for being able to get the meat into such a consistent, tender form - there was definitely quite a bit of hammering involved.

Overall, a very pleasant surprise! And, given the large size of the Cordon Bleu, I almost got an entire lunch out of it as well for the day after, which I definitely did not mind. A small detail: The fries were good and fried very consistently (it generally appears that the chef has nailed down the details and is very consistent in their work), I just happen to prefer them a tiny wee bit crisper than they were, but that’s really a personal-preference-thing.
